In the United States alone, 6.5 million people are treated for back pain every day. For many, these episodes of back pain will become recurrent and chronic. Once a patient develops chronic back pain, they may also develop what is known as “fear avoidance behaviors”.
By definition, “fear avoidance” is simply the avoidance of movements or physical activities the patient feels will cause them pain or make them worse. Fear avoidance behavior is an obstacle to recovery in patients with low back pain. The anticipation of pain may discourage the use of the injured area and lead to further vulnerability and pain. It has been stated that the fear of pain may be more disabling than the pain itself.
To overcome fear avoidance behaviors, and potentially accelerate healing, the patient should be able to:
• Differentiate between “pain” and “harm”
• Undergo treatment in a relaxed environment
• Pace their activities with their ability
• Build confidence with their progression
• Recognize positive results
The use of the SpineSix BioMotion Spinal System® in the treatment plan for patients with back pain can address many of these issues. SpineSix is an extremely gentle, non-invasive, computer-controlled motion therapy system. The “figure 8” movements of the SpineSix are performed in a non-weight weight bearing environment and mimic normal spine mechanics. The range-of-motion is precisely determined by the clinician, allowing gradual progression as tolerated by the patient. The SpineSix comes equipped with a “patient pause switch”, allowing them to maintain control over their therapy session.
Being able to show the patient that their range-of-motion has increased from one treatment session to the next, or within the same session, will promote confidence in their ability to move. The SpineSix can re-educate the patient on the correct physiological movements of the spine, and allow for a faster return to activities of daily living.
